Hydro Power: Pressure drop in a flow split / splash guard

Scroll

Due to the increasing demand for "clean" energy, the existance of hydropower will be more and more important. Therefore, it is very important to optimize all necessary components of power plants. The requirement for the following example was to reduce the pressure loss in a flow split compared to the original design. At the same time, the strength of the parts had to remain constant.

The images show the analysis of the original design, where a significant recirculation zone can be observed. The first image shows the flow field, the second the shows the flow in the splash guard.

The objective of the splash guard analysis was on one hand to analyse the potential to reduce pressure losses and on the other hand to predict cavitation occurance. In this example the pressure distribution was analysed in detail. The picture shows the velocity distribution.
